Abstract

The Dongjia speech, spoken by the She ethnic group in Guizhou province, obviously belongs to Chuanqiandian dialect of Miao because it shares the basic phonetic features of the dialect that the pr-nasalized initial consonants can be distributed in all the tones. But the question that to which sub-dialect it belongs still remains open. So the paper is intended to answer it from the perspective of historical linguistics. The paper first introduces the Dongjia phonology briefly, then compares the cognate ratios with each sub-dialect of Chuanqiandian dialect. After that, it compares the Dongjia’s phonetic features with those of each sub-dialect of the dialect. From these facts, it tries to discuss the Dongjia’s sub-dialect position within the Chuanqianqian dialect.From the perspective of cognate words, Dongjia is closest to Chong’anjiang with the cognate ratio of 80.5% in 595 basic words, then to Huishui with the cognate ratio of 78.7%.From the perspective of phonetic evolutional features, the evolution features of Dongjia is also highly similar to those of Chong’anjiang, then of Huishui.However, Dongjia has its own some unique features. First, some of its initials are highly palatalized. Secondly, a class of pro-Miao vowel often evolved into two vowels in Dongjia. Thirdly, the pro-Miao *C and *D tones first merged one tone and then divided in Dongjia, the way of evolution is very special.Through the comparison of cognate words ratio and the features of sound evolution, this paper reaches the following conclusions:1) Dongjia belongs to Chong’anjiang sub-dialect of Chuanqiandian dialect.2) Chong’an jiang sub-dialect should be divided into two vernaculars, Dongjia and Gejia, because each has its own unique features. 3) Among all other sub-dialects, the relationship between Huishui and Chong’anjiang is closest.
