Abstract


Since Shen Congwen was re-incorporated into the vision of the scholars of Chinese modern and contemporary literature in the eighties of last century, the study about him has been a focus. But how did he change into the "Shen Congwen" as we know today, there is also a broad discuss space. This text attempts to solve this problem, and choose "literary youth " as a perspective to go into the literature creation of Shen. This text investigates author’s literature choice and the change in the concept of literature under the multiple contradictions effect of history, the reality and the field of literature. Hence this text offers a interpretation in different angle on Shen’s early spirit track.Shen was enlightened by May Fourth to leave Western Hunan, came to Beijing to become a "Literary Youth" and chose literature as his work. This is not a casual event in his life, but superimposed with the large number of "Literary Youth" swarming appeared essentially. It shows that there is more profound social and historical heritage behind individual literature choice. Therefore, the "Literary Youth" is a concept even a discourse which is closely linked to the Chinese society from the Late Qing dynasty to May Fourth, is also the product of a series of historical process.Shen’s early imitative writing is a description of exotic Western Hunan and a expression of his inner heart, separated from revolution consciously. When he came to the metropolis of Shanghai, the "Western Hunan" became the spiritual home and the value system of this "Country Folk". "Life" and "human nature" were more and more concerned in Shen’s literature. In his autobiography "The autobiography of Shen Congwen", the modern subject appeared in the memories and narratives, and he also found the special Western Hunan own to him.Shen returned home in 1934, founding "Western Hunan" split into the different scenes of the memory, imagination and the reality. The division of "Western Hunan", the dual identity of "intellectuals" and "Country Folk", made Shen’s binary thinking of "Enlightenment" and "human nature" increasingly solidified. The publication of "The anthology of Shen Congwen " marked the changing of the "Literary Youth" to a sophisticated and well-known professional writer. But since then, Shen was unable to create more ground-breaking works. Therefore, Shen’s last choice is either "the expression of the abstract", or attributed to silence.
