Abstract

Currently, with the development of the peer-to-peer(P2P) network technology, applications in internet are becoming more and more convenient. BitTorrent(BT) is the most popular file sharing system with P2P architecture, whose traffic has occupied up to 60% of the P2P like traffics. So it’s very meaningful to make a study to the BT swarm networks. The emphases of the earlier work was macroscopical measurement, theory analysis and improvement. The data of the earlier studies devoting to macroscopical measurement came from the log of large trackers and passive collection of BT traffics. Recently, lots of studies went deep into the peer level, they made active measurement to BT swarm networks through modifying existing open source BT software. In order to make further study of BT swarm network’s characteristics especially the message features, we have undertaken an in-depth study to a more microcosmic level of the network. According to BitTorrent, the peers in swarms communicate to each other through 11 messages, and the message is the most microcosmic level of the BitTorrent network. So we went deep into the message level, collecting a large amount of messages communicated inside the BT swarms. Our works and innovations are following:1. Build a measurement system platform which could implement a long time measurement to BT swarms stably. The platform can be easily extended and improved.2. Design algorithms to inject into BT network and communicate with normal peers. Collecte accurate data in the real BT swarms, including the amount of peers in swarms every time, the passive listening arrival rate, the state transition of peers and all of the communicating messages.3. Carry out the timing change of the size of swarms and the arrival rate to a single peer through two of the macroscopical collected data.4. Go deep into the message level, and calculate the average peer’s speed in swarms according to the time order relationship of piece and have messages.5. According to the analysis in message level, carry out the time order features of the interaction intensity of the swarms, and the timing change of the message proportion. Most importantly, we detected an absolutely new DDoS attack to the BT network. We also found out the attacking source and take out a method to defend.
