With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), smart home applications are continuouslyincreasing. Such kind of application typically uses devices similar to gateways to communicate withthe controlled side (also called client side), which connect various networks via remote control andcommunicate with the internal sensors in houses. Since the gateway-like device must be standbyall the time, it has to be highly energy-efficient. Accordingly, it cannot have powerful computingcapacity and large storage capacity. However, most existing security methods do not consider theseconstraints in controlled sides. For example, symmetric encryption is simple but not secure enough,whilepublickeyencryptionissafebutrequirescomplexcomputation,andtheusingofdynamicpass-words introduces large communication overhead. Therefore, we should work out a way to realizea simple and secure remote control of controlled sides with limited capacity and less power con-sumption. To this end, this thesis first surveys the state-of-art security methods, and then proposesa lightweight secure communication method for remote control. This method consists of four parts:password setting for both the control side and the controlled side, the dynamic use of passwords, theofflineandonlineupdateofthepasswordsetandpasswordsynchronization. Theproposedschemeisadaptive to choose different encryption algorithms and the suitable size of password set for systemswithvariouscomputingcapacities andstorage capacities. Takinginto account thelimit of computingspeed, storage capacity and the available bandwidth, the proposed implementation of this method issimple and feasible. Meanwhile, the analytical result indicates that the method performs better thanthe other schemes for communication security.
