Abstract

Bromoaromatic compounds, especially bromophenols , have gained increasing interest as versatile intermediates for the synthesis of biologically active compounds such as potential antitumour, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antioxidizing agents. In conventional bromination methods, elemental bromine is used with the generation of toxic and corrosive hydrogen bromide, which leads to serious environmental problems. Due to the high cost, N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) is not proper for the utilization in industry process. In this work, the bromine, generating from the oxidation-reduction reaction between sodium bromide and sodium bromate in the existence of sulfuric acid in water, was used as the brominating agent in the bromonation reaction. Study on the results by setting different reaction temperature, time, and solvent conditions. The conclusion from GC analysis indicates the bromination could be obtained at room temperature for most phenols. This reaction is a mild, environmental friendly and new method in the bromination of phenols.
