Abstract


Foreign direct investment (FDI) has developed rapidly since 1980’s in China. But its regional distribution is quite unbalanced, most of which locates in costal areas. especially in Pearl River Delta Area, Yangtze River Delta Area and Bohai Rim Area. Since 1990’s, the regional agglomeration structure of FDI has experienced significant changes. FDI appeared to move northward gradually from the Pearl River Delta Area to Yangtze River Delta Area and Bohai Rim Area gradually. Focusing on three major costal areas of China, this paper established relevant indicators to measure and analyze the characters of FDI regional agglomeration evolution since 1990’s, and then made qualitative and quantitative analysis on its reason.By means of different indicators, this article described and analyzed the phenomenon and characters of FDI regional agglomeration evolution in China’s three major costal economy districts during 1990-2006. We found that, the regional agglomeration of FDI in China’s three major costal economy districts mainly experienced a decentralization process from the Pearl River Delta Area to Yangtze River Delta Area and Bohai Rim Area since 1990’s, showing the signs of concentrating gradually on Yangtze River Delta Area. And the regional agglomeration centre of FDI has been changed from the Pearl River Delta Area in early reform and opening up period to Yangtze River Delta Area.As to the reason of this phenomenon, this paper firstly conducted a qualitative analysis, mainly including the following aspects: the all-around generalization of opening up policy in China; the change of FDI’s investment motive; the weakening of geopolitical advantages in Pearl River Delta Area; the exsiting good industrial foundation in Yangtze River Delta Area and Bohai Rim Area; better living conditions in Yangtze River Delta Area. On the basis of former analysis, this paper conducted quantitative analysis, through econometric model by means of panel deta and generalized least squares method(GLS). Through empirical analysis, this article found that all factors has affected the distribution of FDI to a certain extent, including traditional economic geography factors, new economic geography factors and economic policy factors. The numerical value of different factors varies in different stages. At present, some factors, including transportation cost, agglomeration effect of FDI, regional consumption capacity, development potential, the extent of opening up and market economy system, are showing more and more significant impact on FDI agglomeration.
