Abstract

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was synthesized through emulsion polymerization by using different types of surfactants under various conditions. The molecular structures of products were proven by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrums, the microstructures of products were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the conductivities of products were measured by four-probe method, the electron structures of products were studied by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrum and the percentages of solubility were also determined. When the anionic surfactant Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid (DBSA) was used to polymerize PEDOT, the conductivity and solubility of products were in a good performance, which was due to the doping process of DBSA; however, all the products had no specific microstructure and these phenomenon was generated by the doping process as well that destroyed the self-assemble micelles of DBSA. When the cationic surfactant Hexadecyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB) was used to polymerize PEDOT, the microstructures of products featured the combined micro-rods when the amount of CTAB was higher than the amount of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT), which can be explained by the fact that CTAB did not participate in the doping process and acted just surfactant, and the microstructure would transferred to the linked nano-rods to irregular nano-particles with the increase of reaction temperature; however, the conductivity and solubility of PEDOT synthesized in CTAB were inferior to those of PEDOT synthesized in DBSA. The influential factors to the solubility of PEDOT were analyzed systematically in this study as well. It was found that the temperature of polymerization influenced the solubility most and the best condition for polymerizing PEDOT with good solubility was that: the oxidant was Ammonium persulfate; the molar ratio of oxidant to EDOT was 4:1; the molar ratio of DBSA to EDOT was 4:1; the temperature of polymerization was 0℃. The best percentage of solubility of synthesized PEDOT was 91.1% in N,N-dimethylformamide, which had graet potential of being applied as the holes transporting layer in electic- and optical devices because the process of polymerization was facile and low cost.
