In the recent ten years from last century’s end, the west China has experienced the earth-shaking change. At the same time of obtain the rapid development in economy, many western cities lost their individuality and context, which have aroused more and more interests.Not far from Qinghai Lake, Qiabuqia is the government locus of both Gonghe County and the Hainan Tibetan Autonomous prefecture. It has the glorious history which may trace in the writing record. In the future, it will obtain a bigger development along with the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the grand western development program of China. But in the reality, Qiabuqia is actually far from the beautiful fable and people’s expectation; the signature that history left in this city seldom can be found. The feature of the city is almost the same with other middle or eastern small cities’.Qiabuqia is so typical and so special as well. It occupies a high-concerned area, the local culture of which is recognized extremely deep and mystical. But simultaneously, the feature of Qiabuqia city is so disappointing. In this city, we must regard the national characteristic and the regional characteristic as one kind of“two in one”topicality. The regional characteristic is a part of the national characteristic; and the nationality is the soul of the region. Although had an explicit theoretical recognition, we still met many difficult problem in the progress of the Qiabuqia program. There are four prominent questions, which have been mostly pondered by the author in the project practice, and have become the key points which this article elaborated.1. Regarding the local culture has not obtained the effective retention national minority area, how excavates and remoulds the region culture through the city and the architectural design?2. In this process of excavating and remoulding, focus on the national multiplicity of west China, how processes the relation of the national characteristic and the regional characteristic?3. In this process of excavating and remoulding, how coordinates the destruction of the local characteristic caused by the worship of“the advanced culture”from the native, and the“applying opera makeup”remoulds caused by impractical imagination of the local characteristic from the foreign people?4. In this process of excavating and remoulding, what roles will the architect, the planner, the local official and the inhabitant act?The research on these questions all include following four parts: the correlation theories elaboration, the similar case research, the realistic problems of west China, the solution of Qiabuqia project.
