Abstract

As novel bioactive materials, bioactive glasses have been widely studied for its biocompatibility bone regeneration ability. Ideally, the materials for bone repaired should have three-dimensional macropore and mesopore structure. Among its structure, the macropore can enable tissue growth and nutriment delivery, and the mesopore can promote cell adhesion, drug storage and delivery due to it’s a large specific BET surface area and pore volume. Generally, these materials have been prepared by multiple template methods. Related reports focus mainly on the synthesis of the macropore using man-made organic templates. Compared to artificial templates, natural biological templates have many advantages due to their abundant, renewable, environmental friendly properties and unique multilevel structures and complex morphologies. So, in this paper, a series of hierarchically porous bioactive glasses were successfully prepared by using different plants their different parts as macroporous templates, a P123 as mesoporous template. The various modern testing techniques are used to characterize the as-synthesized samples, and the bioactivity in vitro of the material has been investigated as well. The results show that these bioactive glasses have good osteogenic properties, and may have potential application in tissue regeneration engineering.
