Abstract


Through the introduction of the background of Stresemann’s time, his guiding ideology on diplomacy, this paper tries to analyse his diplomatic activities, investigate the influence of his diplomatic activities on history,and draw lessons from them .Chapter 1 The Background of Stresemann’s Diplomatic Activities,His Goal and Approach to StrategyAfter the World War I, Germany was sanctioned severely by Entente Powers .But there were lots of loophole which were benefit to Germany in fragile Versailles System .According to the internal and external situation of post-war Germany, Stresemann laid down his diplomatic goal and approach, decided to adopt conformable policy and take advantage of the Contradictions among Great Britain, France, United States and Soviet Union, so that he could improve the relationship between Germany and Western countries and the status of Germany.Chapter 2 Stresemann’s Diplomatic Activities and AchievementsCompensation was a main problem that troubled relations between Germany and Western countries. This problem triggered Ruhr crisis in 1923. After he worked as German Foreign Minister, Stresemann suppressed France with the help of Great Britain and United States. Then he solve the compension problem appropriately by the adoption of Dawes Plan and Young Plan.Security issues is another main problem that troubled relations between Germany and Western countries. Stresemann sloved this problem at Locarno Conference held in 1925. Stresemann admitted the demilitarization of Rhineland, in exchange for the permission of Western countries to change the eastern border of Germany, and drove a wedge between the relationship between France and its allies in Eastern Europe.Though it was not the focus of Stresemann’s diplomatic strategy, the development of relationship between Germany and Soviet Union can not be neglected. The relations between Germany and Soviet Union helped a lot on the independence of German diplomacy. Stresemann could suppress Western countries by taking advantage of Soviet Union.Chapter 3 The Influence of Stresemann’s Diplomatic Activities on HistoryFirstly, Stresemann’s diplomatic activities improved the external environment of Germany in 1920s. Secondly, it helps a lot on Hitler’s expansion in 1930s.Through the conclusion of《Locarno Convention》, Germany improved its relationship with Western countries, especially France. Germany also drove a wedge between the relationship between France and its allies in Eastern Europe, which greatly strengthened its strategic position. Germany joined United of Nations as a permanent member, recovered its status as a great power, shook the foundation of Versailles System.During the 1930s, the Lifting of the alliance between France and Poland supplied Hitler’s expansion with great convenience. Great Britain and France disappointed many Central and Eastern European countries a lot because of their incompetence for maintaining《Locarno Convention》. Besides, Stresemann’s diplomatic activities also supplied the rearmament of Germany with great convenience, which Laid the foundation for German army’s development at Hitler’s time. All of these benefited Hitler a lot.Chapter 4 The Summary Evaluation of Stresemann’s Diplomatic Activities This chapter is the summary evaluation of Stresemann’s Diplomatic Activities. There are two reasons for his success. The first one is his moderate, pragmatic, independent foreign policies. Secondly, Stresemann faced the current international system as a participant, not a challenger.Stresemann’s diplomatic achievements vanished during the World War II. That’s because he can not improve the internal environment of Germany, which leads to fatal error of German diplomacy, though he improved the external environment a lot. This painful lesson should be f\remembered forever.
