Abstract


Ever since the Reform and Open was initiated, as the biggest developing country in this world, China has attracted the noticeable inward FDI, which has helped to boost China’s foreign trade. However, FDI has also brought negative effects at the same time.How to assess FDI’s impact on host countries objectively is very important in introducing and managing FDI, so that FDI can be best used to develop economy, optimize industrial structures and improve social warfare.To achieve this aim, this paper combines FDI host effects with terms of trade, analyses the main channels and mechanism of FDI’s impact on terms of trade theoretically. Based on this, it then goes on to investigate the characteristics of China’s inward FDI as well as to empirically study how inward FDI affects China’s terms of trade. The conlusions are: (1) Generally speaking, FDI improved China’s NBTT as a whole, while it led to the deterioration of the NBTT of manufactured goods, especially the NBTT of processing trade. Among all the FDI, FDI from the U.S.A benefited NBTT, but NBTT worsened as a result of FDI from HongKong, Taiwan and Macao.(2) In China, inward FDI really reduced the NBTT volatility by adjusting the trade structure.(3)FDI improved the ITT by increasing export in large amounts.(4)As to the SFTT, FDI improved it notably by promoting labor productivity of manufacturing industry. But such promotion is not enough to make up the productivity gap between China and its trade partners. Thus, China’s DFTT is declining in the fluctuation.This paper contributes to further research as follows: first, combine FDI host effects with terms of trade, and discuss the relationship between them theoretically and empirically; second, divide FDI into different groups by their origin, and study each group’s impact on NBTT.
