Abstract


Chengdu has been the center of the southwest region since it was appeared.The development of Chengdu depends on the force of the self-organization and the his-organization（such as war） to the rise and fall.As a inland city,the development is on the basis of agricultural civilization.As the traditional inland center,in the process of the urban development there’re two main driving forces included:the restriction of the institution and the administration power of goverment.On the contrast of east coastal region,Chengdu is less affectived by the western culture.The development in recent 100 years make plenty accumulation for the modernization.The characteristic of urban spatial structure evolution performs weak to strong.Though the substantial historical data collation、analysis and research,the article come to the conlusion that the transform of urban space elements and how do they get relative to the urban space by the respective of the urban space elements,in order to explain the moderniztion of Chengdu by the aspect of urban space.The article gets three conclusions:First,Chengdu urban spatial structure evolution appears different characteristic for two phases by the divided of the Revolution of 1911.The 1st phase is the urban spatial evolution budding period（1840-1911）.After the Westernization Movement,the Reform Movement of 1989,the New Policy Period of the Later Qing Dynasty,made the production of new urban function elements and the introduction of capitalist,then cause the urban spatial elements changes.The news ones replace the foregone ones,the city began to step into the modernization.The 2nd phase is the urban spatial evolution period （1912-1949）.After the Revolution of 1911,the mutli urban structure（Da Cheng and Man Cheng） has been broken up.The circumvallation of Man Cheng is removed,and the urban space turn out to be open gradually.Diffent culture began to melte together, and the ruban space development comes to a new balance The establishment of the Chengdu Government in 1928 mark the ending of 1000-year of separate counties rule to break up.Anti-Japanese War as a base for the construction of the Chengdu city has brought a great social and economic development.Second,in the urban spatial evolution budding period,the administration power system becomes to the main power fore the urban spatial development,and it appears the Self-organization way to develop.The policy in the Later Qing Dynasty,make the polarization for the urban space.The government and the military force rein the urban space.There is no absolute change in the urban spatial structure till the end of Qing Dynasty.Third,in the urban spatial evolution period the administration power systems are still the main driving force of the urban spatial development,but at the same time,the outside force such as war has a composite or offset relative to it,casing the prosperity first to the failure later of the space.The development of industrial civilization、the changes in the transportation technology and the policy bias gradually make the Chengdu city from a single consumptive city to a multi-functional city.After 100 years evolution of the urban spatial,Chengdu completes the modernization process gradually.
