Abstract

ZL101 aluminum alloy is a widely used Al-Si alloy in automobile industry for its good casting and mechanical properties. Components and materials are usually working in the corrosive medium in actual conditions. Corrosion will reduce the strength and fatigue life of the materials so as to cause disastrous accidents and great loss. Therefore it’s significant to have ZL101 aluminum alloy researched by stress corrosion cracking and fatigue corrosion tests. It has been studied that experiments of stress corrosion cracking and fatigue corrosion of ZL101 aluminum alloy based on having learnt research status and test methods about it. The corrosion properties were analyzed, the corrosion mechanism was discussed, and it provided some test foundation to estimating the corrosion fatigue life.In the stress corrosion cracking test of ZL101 aluminum alloy, self-made load sensors have been designed and produced that could determine the SIF of crack tips of the thinned modified WOF specimens. The initiating cracking time was measured at different tension and compressive stress in the experiments. The results are as follows. Compressive stress can cause stress corrosion cracking. Stress corrosion crack propagation at tension stress is more severe than that at compressive stress. The corrosion mechanism is mainly anodic dissolution model and mechanical model and the anodic dissolution model is especially the major model. Initiating cracking time at compressive stress is longer than which at tension stress at the same SIF level and the material at tension stress is more sensitive to stress corrosion cracking. Corrosion cracking is intergranular corrosion cracking. In the corrosion fatigue test of ZL101 aluminum alloy, corrosion container was designed according to experiment equipments. The corrosion tests were carried out at stress controlled using hourglass-shaped specimens. The results are as follows. The material fatigue life decreases because of the introduction of corrosive medium. Corrosion fatigue cracking life reduces with the decreasing of pH scale. Corrosion fatigue is the result of the coupling effect of the fatigue damage and the corrosion damage. Fatigue damage contributes to the occurrence of corrosion and corrosion damage in turn accelerates the fatigue damage. A corrosion fatigue cracking initiation life model was established by means of drafting S-N curves. This study will play a role in experiment research of stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue.
