Abstract

A flow-sheet simulation model for cellulosic ethanol production process in the biorefinery mini-plant of East China University of Science and Technology has been established in this dissertation using the commercial software Aspen Plus. The simulation model constructed a complete biomass property database and investigated many aspects concerning ethanol production process, including a rigid material balance and energy consumption calculation about the process, the effect of waste-water recycling and comprehend energy consumption on the process economy and the effect of different operational parameters on the water usage, waste-water discharge and energy consumption for unit ethanol production. The results showed that, under the maximum productivity of the cellulosic ethanol mini-plant, producing 1 kg cellulosic ethanol required 2.6 kg of fresh water and 3.7 kg of stream, which was lower than the consumption of the corn based ethanol process; required energy input 36.5 MJ and generated 53.6 MJ, which means that the energy generation was greater than the energy consumption; the integrated energy consumption was 1.8 kg standard coal equivalent for both the energy consumption and the energy generation. On the other hand, the optimum cellulosic ethanol production parameters were at solids/liquid ratio of 2.0 in presoaking step, at full filling feedstock ratio in the pretreatment reactor, at 190℃pretreatment temperature and at 30%(w/w) corn stover solids loading with 15.0 FPU/gDM cellulase dosage. The present results and the Aspen plus model are important for the commercialization of the cellulosic ethanol industry.
