Abstract


Based on the study of urban image and urban space form, this thesis makes a preliminary research on the relationship between the two by means of the development of urban space form and it’s remainment in people’s image. The relationship equals to matter and consciousness in philosophy. The physical properties of urban space form determins that there ought to be a public image when people perceive a city, while the diversities of people shape the different image. In post-modern society, urban space form, as a built environment, is regarded as commodity and deeply involved in the circulation of captial. Being urban collective memory, public image is controlled by captial and power to achieve certain purpose by ways of molding and reinforcing collective memory. Conversely, this action leads the development of urban space form to a certain direction.This thesis consists of six chapters, including 126600 words and 132 diagrams. Chapter one points out the background, significance, related researches and the frame of this thesis. Chapter two summarizes the conception of urban image and some theories relevant. Besides, it discusses three ways of imagining city and sets forth the relationship between architecture form and urban image. Chapter three first discusses the feature of urban space form and the patterns of urban interior and exterior space form. Secondly, it contrasts the Chinese urban space form development with west countries. Finally, it discusses the relationship between architecture form and urban space form. Chapter four explores the relationship between urban image and urban space form in philosophy view and points out the physical properties of urban space form and different individual urban image by the case study of Yuzhong Peninsula, Chongqing. Combining the theories of‘the production of space’and‘consumption culture’, chapter five proposes the conception of‘commercial value of image’to illustrate how consumption culture affects urban image and urban space form. Chater six puts forward the conclusion and the shortcomings of the thesis.
