Abstract


Every philosopher has his own views on the history of Chinese philosophy. Because of his differences in position in the field of research, academic background and structure of knowledge, Fang Dongmei compiles Chinese history of philosophy by a different way.In Fang’s opinion, the history of Chinese philosophy is the history which depicts the spirit and development of Chinese philosophy. Therefore, firstly he defines the spiritual meaning of Chinese philosophy, and by this criteria he focuses on four main streams in his research. By way of metaphysics, he takes a overall insight into the common characteristics of Chinese philosophy in the perspective of humanism. He manages to highlight the advantage of Chinese philosophy by means of comparing Chinese philosophy to foreign ones and he is looking forward to achieving the rejuvenation of the Chinese and western philosophy and the“double-back blueprint of his life”by carrying forward the spirit in philosophy. Judging from the course of his study in the history of Chinese philosophy, Fang Dongmei is“building”his own academic system of the history of Chinese philosophy rather than compiling it.
