Abstract


The birth of the surname is closely related to the social development of a country. As a product of Italian history and culture, the Italian surnames contain not only the Italian history, but also a series of valuble information regarding to its language, religion, geography, class status, etc.This dissertation studies the Italian surname. Analysing the causes of its birth and evolution from perspectives of linguistics and extralinguistics, the author attemps to explore and elaborate the inner contact and relationship among the Italian language, Italian suranames and the Italian culture.The evolution of the Italian surnames is reconstructed in the first part of the body. After giving a general view of the birth of surnames in the world’s context, the dissertation begins to focus on Italy, combined with the historical background of different periods, with an emphasis on the developmente and its motivation of the Italian surnames, from ancient Roman period, the early Middle Ages, the late Middle Ages, Renaissance, until the modern times.Subsequently, the author utilizes the linguistic theory, such as phonetic, morphology, etymology and rhetoric to study the suranmes as the words in the vocabulary of a language. In this part, a large number of examples are cited to reveal the relations between the Italian language and the Italian surnames.From the sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics points of view, the third part attempts to find out the impact made by the italian surnames on the individual, family and interpersonal relationship and their application in the social life. As an extention and summary of the previous two parts, it illustrates the the inter-relationship among the language, culture and surnames.In the end, the article concludes: the developmente of social and economic life have made inevitable the birth of surnames; Antroponym, toponym and nickname constitute the main source of the Italian surnames; Italian surnames, through its language charatcteristics, reflect the Italian social and cultural features and have a decisive influence on the people’s daily life.
