Abstract

Praise is frequently used in everyday communication a courtesy speech act, the speaker on the hearer possess good qualities or possessions dominant or recessive praise. Compliments and answering people's verbal communication skills constitute an important aspect. Numerous studies indicate that verbal behavior is not as simple as it looks, it relates to the social, cultural and many other aspects of the language. Nearly three decades, Compliments of response when the language has been a hot research studies have involved pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, communicative ethnography, intercultural communication and other fields. But research on the response Compliments are mostly based on English culture, Chinese cultural context and not studied, more importantly, for the Chinese Compliment comparative study of the response is less, which is the main study motivation. This paper aims to use comparative analysis method, based on speech act theory and politeness theory, the two languages ??Compliments US cross-cultural comparative analysis of responses; This study used questionnaires collected receipts, questionnaire design reference to Beebe et al. (1990) and other scholars \This paper questionnaires were designed eight scenarios, each scenario questionnaire describes a separate topic, involving the appearance, personality, abilities and possessions achievements. Selected subjects from different gender, age, educational level and occupational background of 40 native Chinese speakers and 20 native speakers of American English, a total of 60 people. Questionnaire asked the subjects according to daily life habits verbal answer questions, write their mother tongue praise response mode. Collected through the questionnaire data, using SPSS chi-square test was used for quantitative analysis. In addition, social factors, namely, gender, age and education on the impact of strategic choices Compliments also passed Spearman correlation coefficients were determined. The results showed that: (1) In response strategies praised the frequency of use, the American English and Chinese strategic choices both similarities, there are also significant differences.
