Abstract


It has always been one of the most important ways for the updating and developing of Chinese vocabulary to create a steady flow of fresh words through rhetorical approaches since the ancient times. Such approaches of creating new words is called rhetorical methods of word coinage, which is very productive and in accordance with Chinese characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary and useful to further the study of ancient Chinese coinage.This article is divided into three parts. The first part, which consists of four parts, mainly concerns with rhetorical word coinage related problems. It discusses the influence that Chinese traditional ways of thinking has on Chinese word coinage and argues that there exists inner logical connection between rhetorical word coinage and thinking mode, which is worth further study. Secondly, it makes contrastive analysis on word formation and word coinage. This is originated from the fact that people used to pay more attention on the study of word formation while neglect the study of word coinage. Thirdly, this part tries to make clear the cause of the generation of rhetorical word coinage. Fourthly, it researches into the relevant notion of rhetorical word coinage.The second part makes classified analysis on rhetorical word coinage. According to the rhetorical devices employed in the process of word coinage, this passage distinguishes metaphorical word coinage, metonymical word coinage, allusion related word coinage, euphemistic word coinage, overstated word coinage, homophonic word coinage and so on. These different ways of word coinage differ with each other in their word coinage potential and the frequency of use, but it is these different ways word coinage that create a large amount of new words, contributing a lot for the development of the Chinese language. The third part mainly discusses the importance of rhetorical word coinage and its theoretical value and practical significance.
