Abstract


Objective:To describe the complications and efficacy of vaginal suspension with mesh for pelvic organ prolapse.Methods:In this descriptive study, we analyzed the complications and efficacy of vaginal suspension in 17 women with pelvic organ prolapse at the Women’s Hospital of Zhejiang University between July 2007 and August 2008. We use the plication of urethra for treatment of SUI. The patients were reassessed at 8-12 weeks after the surgery. Objective criteria of cure and subjective criteria were studied with assessment of the repercussions of treatment on quality of life by physical examination, and appropriate questions. The urodynamics study was did if necessary. The assessment was repeated every three months. Twelve months after surgery the patients were assessed every 6 months. Six months after surgery, P-QOL was used to compare the postoperative satisfaction with the preoperative satisfaction. Results:All of the women referred to our Urogynaecological Units complaining of prolapse symptoms because of prolapse of pelvic organ. And had vaginal or uterine prolapse POP-Q stageⅡ-Ⅳwith subjective feeling of prolapse. The mean age was 56.6 years (range,40-79). Mean surgical time was 106.8 minutes (range,60-220). The patients were discharged 5-18 days after the surgery. The mean follow-up period was 17.2 months (range,9-26). Significant differences were found in satisfaction (90.1±32.6 VS 123.9±26.7, P<0.05). Four epatients with mesh were exposed in the follow-up period.Conclusion:Vaginal suspension with mesh is an effective and safe treatment for pelvic organ prolapse in elderly women. But there is a risk of mesh erosion.
