Abstract


This paper starts with the history origin of civilian craft fans, and explores the culture details. Through the combination of picking up the data and visiting on the spot, most datas of civilian craft fans are collected, such as: the material, structure, culture and the manufacture process and so on. So that the process and connotation of civilian craft fans could be deeply discovered, and the form and materials of it could be innovative researched, it is hoped as a symbol of the Chinese nationality traditional culture and got around the world.After the industrial revolution, handicraft products have been gradually replaced by mechanized production. After a hundred years silence, many articles on the history were gradually withdrew from the people’s production stage of life, the only pure handicraft production have also been the replaced by mode production and high-volume manufacturing. However, handicraft is different from the industrial production, because each one is unique and cannot be copied. While the function of civilian craft fan has been increasingly substituted by mechanized air-conditioning and fan, the expression cultural information always indwells at the hearts of the people around world which includes representation of the literati and as a symbol of the Orient. Japanese folding fan has been important as the nation’s culture, no matter the appearance and materials, Japan "harmonious" fans have become a symbol of Japan. According to the textual research, folding fan was first invented in China and spread out, which is a symbol of Japanese culture now. This is a great regret.Through the past one year data collection of traditional civilian fans, and nearly a month in SuZhou and HangZhou visiting & researching about the status of civilian fans: there are very few related books about production and appreciation fans, and related internet information is limited to sources and history of fans. So this paper focus on the collection of datas such as: applied materials, product process of fans and cultural information of fans. The production process of China’s Jiangsu and Zhejiang crafts fan was protected and packed up, its materials and manufacturing innovation was experimented, and its internal culture of profound meaning was deeply explored.According to the reseach of civilian craft fan in recent year, on the one hand, author learned a lot of comprehending and understangding from this. The possibility of folding fan as a symbol of Chinese culture again, or finding another way that combination with modern design, is that we should really think about.
