Abstract


As an important music educator in the 1930s, basing on the practical meaning of modern Chinese development of professional music, Ou Manlang’s total westernization as well as his widely known western instrumental rationality are not only one of the possible in the very modern Chinese culture, but also a transition of Chinese music caused by social development. In addition, it is a musical guide, which is spur to the transition of Chinese cultural value.This essay is to give a conclusion as well as an explanation to Ou’s varieties of musical theories and translation. By doing this, this essay will find the source of his ideas about music, find his ideas and musical value, and finally know the modern real meaning and social representation of his behaviors on music.Altogether, there are three parts in this essay. In chapter one, it mainly deals with what Ou Manlang did and the background of his essays on music. In chapter two, it analyzes Ou’s views on music and his concept of music education. In chapter three, by analyzing Ou Manlang, it discusses the "Ou Manlang phenomenon" appearing in modern music history through several aspects, for example, between China and the West, the refined and the popular tastes, ancient and modern.
