Abstract

The effects of tempering temperatures and operation conditions on the wear resistance of 45 steel were studied. The morphology, composition, and structure of worn surfaces were examined and analyzed using SEM, EDS and XRD. The wear mechanism was discussed. This is of an important academic significance to the research of oxidative wear. The results show that the effect of microstructure on the wear loss depended on the load. Under a low load of 50 - 100 N, there was not apparent influence of microstructure on wear loss. With increasing the load, the microstructures markedly affected wear loss. The wear loss increased with increasing tempering temperature and reducing hardness. The ambient temperature also had apparent influence on wear loss. The wear losses at room temperature and 200℃approached each other, but they are markedly lower than those at 400℃. There are three types of wear mechanisms under the following conditions in 45 steel. Abrasive wear prevailed at room temperature and under a load of 50 N at 200℃. Oxidation wear prevailed under 100 - 150 N at 200℃as well as under 50 - 100 N at 400℃. The oxides are composed of Fe3O4, a small amount of Fe2O3 and FeO. The wear debris included the mixture of Fe, Fe3O4, Fe2O3 and FeO. Plastic extrusion prevailed under 150 N at 400℃.
