Life is better, at the same time; people pay more attention to the healthier life. With the development of technology, medical treatment has been improved a lot, and many diseases which could not be healed long time ago can be radical cured nowadays. But everything has its limits. The booming of population and the globalization make some infectious disease diffuse more quickly than before. Besides, sometimes medical treatment can not catch up with the rapid variation of virus. Hepatitis is one of the most common infectious diseases in the world. Especially in China, there are 1.2 million people having Hepatitis B virus infection, which means in China nearly 1/10 of population has the infection. To treat hepatitis, liver transplantation is the best treatment, but there are few well matched healthy liver to transplant into patients. Therefore, outside body artificial liver support systems have become the most effective and main treatment method. However, all the artificial liver used by hospitals in domestic are imported from abroad. In domestic, the ability to do independent research & development of artificial liver and clinical experiment needs to be improved. As the beginning of the study of artificial liver, chapter 1 describes the significant of artificial liver in the treatment of liver diseases, and discusses the outstanding issues in designing the artificial liver systems. This chapter also introduces the hemorheology, blood cell rheology and their development status. Series of constitutive equations of blood are set out. Finally this chapter introduces the state of the art of hemodynamics and factors affecting blood flow.In chapter 2, series of equations are set out under two different mathematical models to describe the non-Newtonian properties in tubes of small diameter. Numerical simulation and results are analyzed and discussed. In chapter 3, new geometry models of artificial liver fibers are established. To contrast the original straight pipe, mathematical models in U-tube and helical tube are set out and numerical simulation and results are obtained to disuse the performance of the blood flow.On the basis of previous analysis, Chapter 4 discuses the functions of curvature of both U-tube and helical tube, and chapter 5 discusses the inlet straight tube in the helical tube system. The numerical simulation and results are carried out and analyzed.Chapter 6 is based on two different unsteady velocity inlet conditions, one is pulsatile flow and the other is the sinusoid flow, to analyze the blood flow in both U-tube and helical tube. The velocity distribution, pressure distribution and the wall shear stress (WSS) distribution of the blood flow are obtained and discussed. The last chapter is the summery of present work in this thesis and put forward other important issues that need to be studied on in the next step of scientific research.
