Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders are a group of clinical diseases, which can affect the temporomandibular joint and (or) the masticatory muscles system. The symptoms of temporomandibular disorders are mainly consist of temporomandibular joint pain or the masticatory muscles pain, difficulties in opening mouth, mouth open-type shifting and joint clicking. The etiological factors of these diseases are varied. With the medicine pattern transformating from simple biomedicine pattern to the biology-psychology-society medicine pattern, the psychological factor is playing an increasingly important role in the process of temporomandibular joint disorders. Objective:To study the effect of personality traits in the process of temporomandibular disorders by analyzing different symptoms of temporomandibular disorders appeared in persons who were in face of social stress, and to observe the clinical features of temporomandibular disorders caused by the psychological factors, by which to guide the treatment of the temporomandibular disorders.Methods:1 Forty-one students of the five-year class who were enrolled in 2005 in the institute of Stomatology, Shandong University were selected.2 The volunteers participating in the survey were asked to fill out the questionnaire when they were waiting for the performance record of the entrance examination for the postgraduate. Everyone must accept the unified guidance and answer the whole 48 questions of the Eysenck’s personality questionnaire (Chinese edition) and the temporomandibular joint disorders syndrome symptom questionnaire.3 According to the Scoring criteria of the Eysenck’s personality questionnaire (Chinese edition), the scores of N, P, E, L of each questionnaire were calculated. The groups were as followed.(1) According to the joint clicking, we divided the subjects into two groups: joint clicking group and no joint clicking group. The scores of N, P, E, L obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed to see whether there was statistical significance between the two groups. And the personality traits of the subjects in the joint clicking group were summarized.(2) According to the temporomandibular joint pain or the masticatory muscles pain, we divided the subjects into two groups:pain group and no pain group. The scores of N, P, E, L were also analyzed to see whether there was statistical significance between the two groups. And the personality traits of the subjects in the pain group were summarized.(3) According to the open-type of the mouth, we divided the subjects into two groups:normal open-type group and abnomal open-type group. The scores of N, P, E, L obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed to see whether there was statistical significance between the two groups. And the personality traits of the subjects in the abnomal open-type group were summarized.Results:1 By the comparison of the joint clicking group and no joint clicking group, we found that the subjects of joint clicking group tended to have the personality traits of abnormal mental quality, including frequent careless of others, always in troubles, feeling uncomfortable everywhere, lacking sympathy and hostile to others.2 By the comparison of the pain group and no pain group, we found that the subjects of pain group tended to be more unstable and more introverted (equivalent to depression), persons of this kind were conservative and scrupulous, and their friends were relatively less. They tended to be pessimistic and had the personality traits of unstable emotion, anxiety, tension, irritability and sensitiveness to stimuli. 3 By the comparison of the normal open-type group and abnomal open-type group, we found that the subjects of abnomal open-type group tended to be more unstable and more introverted (equivalent to depression), persons of this kind were conservative and scrupulous, and their friends were relatively less. They tended to be pessimistic and had the personality traits of unstable emotion, anxiety, tension, irritability and sensitiveness to stimuli.4 To sum up, the persons with the temporomandibular disorders have similar personality traits:abnormal mental quality, introvertion, unstability in emotion, anxiety, tension, irritability and sensitiveness to stimuli.Conclusion:The persons with psychoticism anomalies, introverted personality and unstable emotion are prone to appear some symptoms of the temporomandibular disorders when they are in face of pressure. These symptoms are mainly consist of temporomandibular joint pain or the masticatory muscles pain, difficulties in opening mouth, mouth open-type shifting and joint clicking. Among these the pain in the temporomandibular joint area and masticatory muscle are most obvious, the reason of which may be correlated to the release from psychological pressure.
