Abstract

The mobile station (MS) in mobile broadband wireless access networks accepts service during mobile process, the MS is generally powered by battery. The power saving scheme is one of the most significant issues to be considered. Based on the sleep mode in the IEEE 802.16e, power saving class of type III for multicast connections and management operations is studied in this paper.Firstly, considering the fact that too frequent switches between the sleep mode and the awake mode will lead to great response time of packets, we introduce a sleep-delay mechanism, set a sleep-delay timer and propose the power saving class of type III with sleep-delay. The performance measure system consists of the handover ratio, the power saving ratio, the average response time and the system utility for power saving class of type III is built.Secondly, a multiple vacation Geom/G/1 queueing model without vacation-delay and a multiple vacation Geom/G/1 queueing model with vacation-delay are built to capture the working principles of power saving class of type III without sleep-delay and with sleep-delay, respectively. Using the method of the boundary state variable theory, we give the performance measures for the power saving class of type III in the user initiated traffic, and the optimal length of the sleep window and the sleep-delay timer.Thirdly, considering the batch arrival scheme, according to the operating principle of the power saving class of type III without sleep-delay and with sleep-delay, a multiple vacation Geom~ξ/G/1 queueing model without vacation-delay and a multiple vacation Geomξ/G/1 queueing model with vacation-delay are built, respectively. Using the method of the boundary state variable theory, we give the performance measures for the power saving class of type III in the bursty traffic, and systemic simulation is given. Finally, we suppose the input process to be a D-BMAP (Discrete-Time Batch Markov Arrival Process), and build a multiple vacation D-BMAP queueing model with vacation-delay and suppose the vacation length be fixed. System performance measures for the power saving class of type III with sleep-delay in correlation traffic are derived by using factorization principles for generalized vacations. Taking the on-off model as an example, the dependency relationships of system performance measures on system configuration parameters are discussed by numerical examples and simulation experiments.
