ObjectiveTo compare the effect of pain relief and the incidence of bone cement leakage and PMMA pulmonary embolism of PVP and PKP, hoping this article could be helpfull when clinical docters make choice between PVP and PKP.MethodsBetween September,2006 and April,2010,64 patients subjected to single-level OVCF was treated with either PVP or PKP. They were divided into PVP group, A group, with 21 patients and PKP group, B group, with 43 patients. VAS obtained preoperatively, postoperatively and 1 month,3 months after operation were retrospectively studied. Postoperative thoracic or lumbar X-ray radiographies,and routine postoperative chest films compared with preoperative chest films were reviewed too, thereby the incidence of cement leakage and PMMA pulmonary embolism could be got. VAS, incidence of leakage and pulmonay embolism were statistically treated.ResultsDiscrepancy between A and B group in VAS was not statistical(p> 0.05). There were 6 patiences with paravertebral cement leakage,1 patient with PMMA pulmonary embolism in group A,5 patiences with leakage and 1 patience with embolism in group B. The incidence of cement leakage and PMMA pulmonary embolism was 28.35% and 4.76% respectively in A group while 11.62% and 1.16% respectively in B group. Discrepancy in incidence of cement leakage and PMMA pulmonary embolism was statistical. (p<0.05)ConclusionPKP is a better choice considering cement leakage and PMMA pulmonary embolism, while PVP is as good as PKP in pain-killing. PKP should be the first choice if the situation allows.
