Abstract


Collection of Taowu is also known as Huan Haizhong (Caution to the officials), is authorized by Qian Xibao, Qing Dynasty. This is a valuable condemnation novel in late Qing Dynasty, but has not received its due attention for a long period. This thesis carries on a research to Collection of Taowu, the text is divided into several parts as follows:The first chapter explicates the author of this novel and the days of his age. This chapter falls into three sections. The first section lays emphasis on his personal narrative. Qian Xibao, whose given name is Shuchu, Hefang and Pumei. He was born on April sixteenth,1865, Qing Dynasty, in County Fu Renhe, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He is a student in the county. His brother is Qian Xibin and Qian Xincai. His works are Collection of Taowu, and one volume of Chant in Di Bintang. There are also four poems of Qian’s Ode to harvest year in Zangzhong in Jiang Shinong’s Collection of Tsinghua. The second section tends to elaborate on the historical background of Collection of Taowu. Through the analysis of late Qing Dynasty, the author probes into the social background of the work. The third section starts with cultural factor. The author grasps the essence of cultural factor in this novel to analyze the flourish of fiction in late Qing Dynasty.The second chapter expounds on content feature and ideology of Collection of Taowu and offers a typical analysis of the officials and the prostitutes in the novel. This chapter discusses the social situation of the mass, the value orientation and mental conflict of the official and the social situation of self-redemption of the prostitute.The third chapter analyzes the artistic feature of Collection of Taowu, emphasizing the discussion of the artistic feature of the novel. The structure, the narrative skill or the ironic feature are rather distinctive. For instance the chapter heading has great originality. The narrative skill has change a bit in comparison with the former. The author has immersed into the novel. The third person narrative restriction has strengthened the sense of reality of the novel. The adoption of irony has made the character more vivid.The fourth chapter is a comparison of Collection of Taowu with its contemporary condemnation novel Records of the officials and Queer situation of a score. This chapter compares from the content, structure and narrative model with Collection of Taowu. By means of comparison, the author will have a more comprehensive analysis of Collection of Taowu.The concluding part illustrates the value, significance, influence and modern inspiration of Collection of Taowu.
