Abstract

Octodonta nipae Maulik is an important quarantine pest injuring Palm plants and causing losses of economic and ornamental value. In 2007, O. nipae outbroke locally in Fujian Province. Thereafter, Tetrastichus brontispae Ferrière as a parasitoid natural enemy was introduced from Hainan Province in 2008. In this paper, the biological characteristics of T. brontispae were studied, which aimed to reveal the principle of T. brontispae parasitizing O. nipae and to provide scientific bases for artificial breeding and conservation of T. brontispae, and for effectively controlling O. nipae with T. brontispae as a biocontrol agent. The main results were as below.1. Host preference and aptness for T. brontispaeT. brontispae can parasitize one-to five-day-old pupae of O. nipae, however, prefered to parasitizing one to three-day-old pupae. The female T. brontispae parasitizing one-day-old pupae had the most offspring (25.2±1.2), which indicated that in practical and extensive applicationthe younger pupae of O. nipae were more suitable for breeding T. brontispae. With the number of O. nipae increased, the amount of offspring per female of T. brontispae increased, reaching the top amount of (21.4±2.8) progenies. However, when the raito of the femal T. brontispae to O. nipae pupae was below 1:3, the number of T. brontispae offspring kept a certain level, which illustrated that the most amount of offspring per female of T. brontispae is a constant. As the number of T. brontispae increased, the amount of T. brontispae emergencing from O. nipae pupae also increased, reaching to (38.3±4.6) progenies. However, when the raito of the femal T. brontispae to O. nipae pupae was over 5:1, the number of T. brontispae emergencing from O. nipae pupae decreased, which indicated that when the amount of T. brontispae were in excess, the ovipositon behavior of T. brontispae will be interfered for each other. Therefore, when the number of T. brontispae was insufficient, and the amount of O. nipae pupae was overlarge, the best efficiency of parasitism was at the ratio of 1:3 for T. brontispae feamles against O. nipae pupae. Conversely, when the amount of T. brontispae was large, while the amount of O. nipae pupae was scarce, the efficiency of parasitism was at the 4:1. The age of T. brontispae didn’t significantly affect the efficiency of parasitism on O. nipae. The oviposition peak T. brontispae occurred within 24 h after eclosion and mating. As the days increasing, the efficiency of parasitism by T. brontispae declined.2. Effect of supplementary resource on the longevity and capacity of T. brontispaeThe longevity of T. brontispae was obviously extended by feeding on the honey, glucose, sucrose and water. The longevity of female was extended to 142.5±6.8 hours by feeding on 10﹪sucrose. The male’s longevity was extended to 93.5±4.1 hours by feeding on 10﹪glucose. Whether feeding nutrition or not, the longevity of female was longer than the male. Meanwhile, both the rate of emergency and the number of offspring could be increased by supplying the nutrition resource and water, of which supplying 10﹪sucrosecan significantly increase the emergency rate and offspring number.3. Optimum for the parasitizing capacity of T. brontispaeThe optimum for parasitization and fecundity were at 24℃, RH 85﹪and L:D=12:124. The super-cooling point of T. brontispaeThe super-cooling point and freezing point of female adults were lower than the male ones with (﹣21.9±0.3)℃and (﹣20.0±0.4)℃, respectively, which demonstrated that the resistance of female adults against the cold environment was stronger than that of male adults.5 Effect of cold storage on the capacity of parasitization and fecundity for T. brontispaeUnder the temperature of (13±1)℃,the proper period for storing early and parasitized pupae of O. nipae were 11 days, and≤14 days, respectively, and 2 days for the adults of T.brontispae. Otherwise, the parasitism rate and the offspring number of T. brontispae would decline obviously.
