Abstract

The carpet decorative arts is an important part of the Mongolian traditional arts and crafts. For a long time, the carpets made of woolen, which is also the main nomadic raw materials, have served as people’s clothing, building and the living supplies. It is also a main support to beautify life and an important entity of aesthetic feeling for the nomadic people. Because of the nomadic life style feature and the material liable to putrefaction, the relics are rare. Recently, as the nomadic life style is weakened, the Mongolian traditional carpet decorative arts is under threat, which is related to mobile building (Mongolian yurt). As an important part of the Mongolian in tangible cultural heritage, the Mongolian traditional carpet decorative arts should be protected, as is to inherit and improve it.This essay began with the Mongolian traditional carpet decorative arts feature, compared with Mongolian traditional manual knottedrug, and analyzed on the Mongolian life custom, religious faith and some other traditional cultural factors through a folkloristic and pattern design vision. It also summarized the pattern feature of the Mongolian carpet and knottedrug, and stated the fact that the felt and carpet which is nomadic typical fabric took different routes because of the social impact. In 1271, Kublai established the Great Yuan Empire, and the Mongolian conquered the rest of China. So the mobile building turns to stationary type, and the Qing Dynasty’s Manchu and Mongolian aristocrats started to settle. It is the life style’s transform that discriminate the felt and the carpets’pattern and scope.Through the Contrastive analysis, it discovered the pattern feature of the carpet. In order to provide a design basis and to inherit the culture, it is necessary to analyze the Mongolian tufted carpet and to inquire its cultural and natural background. The main innovation of this essay reflected in:Firstly, it advanced a theory that the felt and the carpet are homologous. They both issued from the Mongolian nomadic life, and than find differences because of the transform of the life style.Secondly, it summarized the decoration characteristic of the carpet decorative art. It concluded that the Mongolian traditional carpet decorative arts is the right headstream of the Mongolian traditional knottedrug art.
