Abstract

Red -footed Booby ( Sula Sula ) is a typical ocean tropical seabirds , widely distributed in the island near the equator , the red -footed boobies in the course of the year there are usually multiple peak spawning , the breeding cycle for almost a year . The survival of tropical seabirds in the the obvious seasonal marine environment , tropical marine form factor conducive to breeding mechanism is still unclear , especially less time on non - seasonally breeding birds and marine environment relationship . The place of work in the Paracel Islands , located in the north of the South China Sea , is a typical tropical monsoon climate region . Us in 2003-2006 survey work on the basis , from September 2006 to May 2008 detailed study of the red -footed boobies breeding time selection , the relationship between reproductive success and the surrounding environment . 2006-2008 red -footed boobies breeding season is divided into three stages , namely early August to September , 11 mid - December , 3- late April , the various stages of a slight change in two years . 2003 to 2006, the red -footed boobies breeding time is approximately from the end of September to the beginning of April the following year . Six breeding season time span is consistent . 2006-2007 season overall breeding success rate was 20.9 % ( n = 148 ) . The highest success rate of 57.4% in the later stages . The 2007-2008 season breeding success rate was 17.9 % ( n = 117 ) , and the highest success rate of late stage was 28.9 % . Reconstruction the nests can improve the reproductive success of the red -footed boobies . Typhoon significant impact on the breeding success rate , the higher the , age greater the survival rate of chicks in the same typhoon ; typhoon farther away from the average breeding date , the smaller the impact on nest survival . 1973-2008 climate data the Paracel Islands typhoon occurs mainly in the June to October , which may be formed 2003-2006 breeding season in the medium term ( December ) the largest number of built nest . However , in December 2006 Typhoon Ute changed the this breeding time selection , changed to the largest number of post - build nests . July 13, 2007 to 2007 period , twice three times food peak corresponding red -footed boobies breeding start , the food may be the main cause of reproductive activity . Squid proportion of the increase in food corresponding to the propagation time , speculated that the the squid for volume changes caused by the knock-on effect .
