Abstract

With its profound philosophical spirit and succinct language style, Tao Te Ching, is praised as a philosophical poem and gains diversity of audiences both at home and abroad. Through more than 2500 years, over 700 commentaries on Tao Te Ching have been come out in China and some are constantly emerging. Without mentioning other European languages, over 130 different renditions of Tao Te Ching have been published only in English world. It has become the most popular and frequently translated text in western countries. Undoubtedly, Tao Te Ching’s translation greatly gives an impulse to the transmittion of Chinese Taoism to the English world. However, Chinese culture is all-embracing, besides Taoism, still consists of other cultures such as Confucuanism, Legalism, and Buddhism and so on which ask for transmission as well. Therefore, with the futher development of cultural diversity, it is significant and meaningful to learn from the successful translation of Tao Te Ching to that of the other Chinese classics, so as to make Chinese culture successfully transmitted and widely accepted in English world.Traditional theories have regarded translation as an objective convey from the source language to the target language. These views on one hand neglect the fact that translation itself is dynamic and constrained by several elements; on the other hand they do not systematically take into account the translators’subjectivity and their cognition during the translation process. With the development of cognitive science, especially after the emergence of conceptual integration theory by Fauconnier &Turner, the translator’s subjectivity is becoming a more and more popular topic. Translation begins to be seen as a process consists of four spaces—two input spaces projected from a genetic space and integrate in a blend space. The translator firstly de-integrate the original conceptual structures with its linguistic construction in the source language context:then re-blend the de-integrated information with his/her own linguistic capability, pragmatic consideration, self-preference as well as the cognitive context into the final expression in the target language context. This thesis firstly introduces the conceptual integration theory and the present study on the combination of conceptual integration theory and the translation practice, and makes a development of the network model of translation, which is a compensation of the previous translation model; then analyzes the translation process of Tao Te Ching with conceptual integration theory. Although conceptual integration theory has been applied by many scholars to the practice of translation, few of them has been applied into the study of specific translation versions. This thesis hopes on one hand to testify the explanatory power of conceptual integration theory for the translation of Chinese ancient classic, on the other hand, to learn from Tao Te Ching’s success to study other text translations.
