Abstract


The notion of a vertex algebra which also could be called vertex operator algebras was introduced by Richard Borcherds tens of years ago, however, this notion was known to physicists much earlier as they already found the vertex operators and tried to study them. The development of vertex algebras involved many branches of mathematics and physics, particularly modular function, Lie algebras, the classification of finite groups and string theory. The importance of vertex algebras is obvious in mathematics and physics, we specially introduce the vertex algebra approach to mirror symmetry.
