Abstract


Poets in last Qing dynasty and 5’4 new poetry revolution meet the same tension, that, on one hand, they need to express new feelings, experience and thoughts of a new era, which have to bring some "non-poetic" elements into their poems; on the other hand, they also must think about aesthetical effects of their poems, comply with some poetic rules. This tension existed through the process of poetry revolution. The strategies to deal with it are critical. The differences of them between last Qing and 5’4 poets decided their different historical value.In order to express new experience, feelings, thoughts of a new era, they brought "non-poetic" elements in their poems. But because of the anxious of aesthetical effects of their poems , poets in last Qing dynasty poetry movement still insisted the traditional poetical rules: ancient style, which limited their steps of poetry revolution. While poets in 5’4 new poetry movement knew the critical significance of the revolution of poem’s form deeply. They continued the former’s way of revolutionand developed it. Moreover , new Chinese revolution movement and the practices of translation western poems gave them the chance and inspire to break the last Qing poem revolution’s limits, established new language and style for modern Chinese poetry, which is obviously different form classic poems. And, at last, made a new foundation for new aesthetical development. Of course, they also have to think about the aesthetical effects of their poems, to face up with the same tension between "non-poetic" expressing needs and "poetical"style rules. And this tension’s performance gradually turned into the inner of the movement, became one of those forces to push the modern poetry developing. After the analysis, we will see, modern poetry revolution is a gradually and unitary process.
