Abstract


In the new literary history and New Culture Movement of China, Zhou Zuoren is a very important writer and thinker with special status. Because of his treason and being a collaborator during the Anti-Japanese War, he was hated by the whole nation, and then, forgot by the literary history of China for nearly 50 years. As the time goes by, the forbidden of doing research on Zhou Zuoren has been broken, his status and importance in the new literary history is going to be evaluated properly and equitably.As a famous "collaborator" and "hermit" of Chinese new literary history, Zhou Zuoren’s thoughts and literary styles before and after The May-fourth have a sharp contrast. Starting on modernity, centering on "human", and focusing on The Literature of Human and My Garden, the author tries to explain Zhou Zuoren’s characteristics as "Being Brave to Take on Burden And Being eclusive" during the years 1917-1937, and then to clarify the impact which the modernity had on Zhou Zuoren and his modernity menifestations.In Chapter 1, the author talks about the concept of modernity in general, and linking with the subject, briefly summarizes the research on Zhou Zuoren who was in The May-fourth, then defines some concepts related in this paper.In Chapter 2, the author analyzes the theoretic explanation and writing practice of Zhou Zuoren while he was working on The Literature of Human during the earlier times of The May-fourth. In this period, Zhou Zuoren was brave to take on burden. From "the literature of human" to the "finding" of nationals, to the "finding" of women, to the "liberation" of children, Zhou Zuoren showed his positive face.In Chapter 3, centering on My Garden, the author draws a conclusion about Zhou Zuoren’s seclusion, then according to his performance after seclusion, his love to flowers, birds, insects, fishes, his love to his hometown, and his aesthetic daily lives, interprets that his seclusion is just a kind of cultural living method in the background of modernity. In Chapter 4, taking the background of that times into consideration, the author concludes the reason of Zhou Zuoren’s two faces--- "brave to take on burden and be elusive",that is, impact of tradition culture and western culture, his growth experience, embarrassment of how-do-you-do for intellectuals. At the same time, the author has a preliminary discussion on the difficulty for the groups of contemporary intellectuals to pursue the modernity.
