Abstract


Henry David Thoreau was the famous American transcendentalist and nature writer in the 19th century . He was a tireless faquir and visitor of nature and has devoted his entire life to nature. Nature in his works turned out splendid and magnificent, quiet and peaceful. His ponder about man-nature relationship sparkled with early ecological ethical ideas. However, such a great writer and thinker was ignored by his contemporaries. With the development of ecological ideas and the rise of various global environmental problems, Thoreau and his works began to draw more and more attention from the public. He is today regarded as "the first major interpreter of nature" and "the first American environmentalist saint" in 19th American. So today re-studying and re-recognizing Thoreau’s concept of nature and his ecological ethical ideas is undoubtedly significant.This thesis is divided into four parts.Part One: Aiming at a systematic interpretation of Thoreau’s nature, this part first gives a brief introduction of the development of nature views, then focuses its attention on interpreting the concept and trait of Thoreau’s nature and tries to explore his ecological ethical ideas.Part Two: After examining Thoreau’s life experience and the impact of oriental and transcendental philosophy, the concern of this part is to discus the source of Thoreau’s nature ideas.Part There: Again, historically describes Thoreau’s influence upon later generations.Part Four: From the above analysis, this part points out the realistic significance of Thoreau’s concept of nature and his life attitude for China’s environmental protection. First of all, it helps us deepen the understanding of harmonious society and the government shift the traditional conception of development. Second, such re-recogition of Thoreau would arouse people’s protection consciousness which will do good to the development environmental undertakings. Last, Thoreau’s simple life manifesto will redound the modern people to have an inlook of their way of life, sweep the dust that blind our heart and explore the new continent of the innermost bosom.
