Abstract


Ancient Greek drama enjoys a very high reputation in the history of the world literature, in which Sophocles is one of the most brilliant writers, and he is praised as“Homer in the dramatic world". During his life-long literary career, he wrote seven tragedies, in which he showed the political scenes and ethics problems by analyzing the details of the characters, and the conflicts between man and man as well as man and fate at that time.By probing into the conflicts and characters in the works of Sophocles, this thesis tries to explore the ethical issues in the society of ancient Greek city-state system. The first part is the introduction of the background of ethical issues in the works of Sophocles, as well as the impact on the city residents. The second part elaborately analyses the conflicts related to man in the background of ethical issues. The last chapter discusses Sophocles’view of ethics from different sides in light of the characters’views on the politics and human nature.
