Abstract

Non-indigenous species transported via ship ballast water has caused serious problems on marine ecosystems and economic development with the rapid growth of shipping industry recently, which has drawn an extensive attention all over the world.Hence, IMO (International Maritime Organization) passed "International convention for the control of ships ballast water and sediments" in 2004 and this convention will be enforced from 2009. How to take effective actions to prevent from and sovle the serious problems is an urgent theme. At first, preliminary research with the basic properties of ballast sediments and morphological identification for the microalgae and cysts has been done in this study. The microwave/sulfate radical (SO4·-) method was chosen based on some methods presently. The conclusions are as follows:(1). Some basic properties of physics and chemistry lie on oyage routes, ship types, voyage time and the ballast water loading locations, for examples: granularity, pH, salinity and so on. The organisms in the ballast water sediments are dominated by diatom and dinoflagellate cyst. Some cysts of harmful algae such as Alexandrium spp have been discovered through making preliminary morphological identification for the microalgae and cysts, which reveals that they are one of the most important reasons.(2). Not only has microwave method fatal damage to the cell wall and organelles but also the structure of cyst, which results in non-germinating of the cysts permanently. Cytomembrane of unicellular algae is damaged by SO4·-, which results that the shape of cell has been changed and the cell is constricted. Microwave and SO4·- has more virtues in less cost, time, more fatal rate.(3). This study chosed 300W, 20S, which is the favorable condition by pretreatment, and found that the higer concentration of SO4·- and the longer time were used, the better the treatment effects.
