Abstract

Global warming becomes more and more serious in recent years. How to reduce carbon dioxide emission and transfer CO2 into useful product is a significant challenge to scientists worldwide. Carbon dioxide reforming of methane is an ideal approach to reduce the CO2 emission and utilize the greenhouse gases simultaneously.Compared to thermally prepared catalyst, Ni/MCM-41catalyst treated by argon plasma has smaller Ni particle size with a narrow particle size distribution. The plasma treated catalyst also shows a stronger interaction between Ni and MCM-41, which is supported by H2-TPR study. In the reaction of CO2 reforming of methane, the catalyst treated by plasma has a higher activity and a better stability, especially at low temperature. Analysis of the used catalyst shows the carbon amount on the thermally prepared catalyst is larger than the plasma treated one, which confirms a much better anti-carbon deposition performance of the plasma treated catalyst. In order to study the reason for the coke resistance performed by plasma-treated catalyst, temperature programmed decomposition of methane (CH4-TPD) was applied. The result shows CH4 decomposition rate on the thermally prepared catalyst is higher than that on the plasma treated one, especially between 460 ?C and 580 ?C. As the methane decomposition rate is much higher than carbon consumption rate on the thermally prepared catalyst, carbon is cumulated on the surface of catalyst. However, since these two rates match each other on the plasma-treated catalyst, accumulation of carbon is prevented. Further study of the accumulated carbon on the catalyst after methane decomposition at 550 ?C, 650 ?C and 750 ?C shows that plasma treatment effectively inhibits the formation of encapsulated carbon and filamentous carbon.
