Abstract


Improving the quality of public environment is an important method of elevating the living standards, one index of which is the quality of social communication that is maintained and elevated by sitting condition of public situation. Good utility seat, composed of basic seat and derived seat, is a sort of necessary facility meeting the requirements of everyday living in public situation. A study on utility seat and sitting behavior is helpful to finding the practical way to design suitable seats for human actrul need.The concrete mode of sitting behavior in public site is affected and restricted by the public environmental characteristics in the physical, psychological and social aspects. A full course of sitting conduct is summarized in four steps:①seat selection,②standard sitting,③adjustment,④end of the action. The basic properties of sitting behavior include saturation of sitting, recyclability and irreversible.This thesis improves the traditional method of calculating the seating density and proposes that a suitable density is a decisive factor in the trend of sitting behavior, and the saturation of sitting can be as the critical point to measure the sitting behavior on the macro statistical limits.The creative highlight of this thesis lies in applying a social role theory to studying a few aspects that different members of society in the social situation lead to role conflict caused by differences of sitting behavior, and a number of typical sitting behavior are comprehensively researched with Environmental Psychology and Ergonomics, and three reasons (physical reason, mental reason and social reason) exist in the contradiction between individual and seat.This research aim at finding requirements of sitting conduct about utility seat, then proposing design principles and concrete solutions of utility seat. The basic principles can be summarized as physical comfortableness, mental easiness and harmonized role. A number of solutions in the concrete suggestion limit the scale of the utility seats in the human design on the basis of China demographic data in National Standards.Based on the field survay and concrete research, the final conclurion of this thesis is the ralationship of utility seat and sitting behavior is embodied in the matching method of the human-machine-environment (situation) system. Only by meeting the requirements of human design, utility seat provide reasonable-effective support for sitting behavior.
