Abstract


Fangzi is a momentous industrial town where Germany invested in Shandong when China was a half-colonial country. With the construction of Jiaoji Railway and the development of Fangzi coal mine, Fangzi became flourishing. At the same time, the imperialistic nations of Germany and Japan excavated the coal resource in Fangzi as much as they can, until it is worn out. Under the ground of old region in Fangzi, there left hollow caves where was once filled with coal resource, which prevented the on-ground civil construction. Fortunately, the action of constructing Fangzi in new regions has preserved the German and Japanese architectures in old region in good shape. Nowadays, the old region of Fanzi contains a lot of German buildings with about 110 yeas old. Such a recent-time architectural heritage group is the best kept one along the line of Jiaoji railway, and its historical landscape features the largest scale, most intact shape and synchronous formation in Shandong province except Qingdao. The German and Japanese architectures in Fangzi are invaluable in aspects of science, history and cultural, as well as economy, since they are the historic witness of different cultures during China’s current-time period.This paper investigated the existing German and Japanese architectures in Fangzi by field survey, then, researched the historic urban quarters and documented the current maintain situation of the German and Japanese architectures, followed by the appraisal on the worth of them. On the basis of these, some concrete suggestions were proposed to protect historic urban quarters, consequently renew and reuse the historic architectures in an organic manner.
