In recent years, with the development of urbanization and the aging of the old city structure, the protection and development of Historic Districts has become an increasingly important issue. China’s Historic District development and renewal work has achieved no small achievement, but still in its infancy. The protection means, methods, and relevant laws and policies, the update mode and so on are all at the learning stage of exploration.Qingdao, as a colonial city with strong, unique historical and cultural background of its history has left many outstanding Architectural Heritage. For this reason, the Government has designated a number of Historical and Cultural Reserve, the Guanhai Mountain Historical and Cultural Reserve is one of them. In Guanhai Mountain and Cultural Reserve, around the Guanhai Road are a large number of unique Courtyard houses, which form a complete historic residential area, Blocks of Guanhai Road, for the reason of the special terrain around. However, a large number of historic buildings within the district haven’t been in detailed investigation, so have not been better maintained. As time goes by, the whole style of the historic district will be severely damaged with the run-down appearance of the buildings. Therefore, in-depth investigation and study is an urgent need to propose Protection program and Update measures.Based on field research, the Raw data of the Blocks of Guanhai Road is Collated and summarized firstly. Then, the profound historical value and significance of the entire block is analyzed from different aspects, such as the whole block style features, street and yard layout features, cultural and historical characteristics of neighborhoods, historic architectural features and so on. Secondly, the protection experiences are learned form domestic and abroad to raise protection proposals and measures in different levels of street, road, courtyard and building. Finally, in summing up common historical street updates pattern from home and abroad, some analysis is given on Material structure, economic conditions, the status of regional development and three possible development Orientations are raised. At the same time, the Theory of city image is learned to make the initial planning of the block image and analysis, in order to make useful exploration for the protection and update of the historic districts.
