Armand clematis ontana Buch has two varieties in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia（2005 edition） They are woody rattan of Clematis armandii Franch and Clematis montana Buch.Its actions include clearing heat,diuretic and stimulate the menstrual flow.It can be used for edema, gonorrhea,urinating unreasonable,rheumatic arthritis,menostasis and latex is few.However,most of the previous related studies were mainly focuse on chemical constituents of Clematis montana Buch.It has oleanolic acid,balsam,sitosterol,hederagenin-based saponin.The common used quality standard of armand clematis ontana Buch is still relied merely on the oleanolic acid that served as a marker compound for the qualitative evaluation standard as stipulated in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia（2005 edition）.According to method of Chinese Pharmacopoeia,we find that Armand clematis ontana Buch of our collection don’t have it.So oleanolic acid could not be responsible for the pharmzcological activities of armand clematis ontana Buch.So we systematically study the chemical of armand clematis ontana Buch. Developing an HPLC method for determination of Stigmasterol in Clematis armandii Franch and Clematis montana Buch.Clematis armandii Franch were extracted two times with ethanol,the extract was concentrated under reduced pressure to small volume.The concentrated liquor was subjected to solvent-solvent partitioning with petroleum ether.The part was concentrated under reduce press.In this study,the extract were segregated over Sephadex LH-20,ODS and silica gel column repeatedly,4 compounds were isolated and purified.On basis of spectral and chemical evidence such as 1H-NMR,13C-NMR,DEPT etc,structures of 4 compounds were elucidated.such as ergosterol, stigmasterol,sitosterol and 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid（z.z）-, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester。Among there compounds,2 compounds were separated from Clematis montana Buch for the first time.For the first time,the content of stigmasterol was determined by HPLC..The results showed the HPLC method is sentives and specifive.
