The application of computer vision technology to traffic detecting and information collecting is an important subject in ITS (Intelligent Transportation System).a traffic information acquisition system based on video detection is researched and developed. A model of vehicle detection and tracking is proposed, region of interesting (ROI) divides into two parts: vehicle detecting area and vehicle tracking area. The algorithm based on virtual loops to detect vehicles in real time is adopted in vehicle detecting area, which uses the background differencing method to segment vehicles from an image. Furthermore a novel technology called spatio-temporal image sequences analysis is applied to background differencing to improve detection accuracy. A preliminary investigation is made into moving objects tracking. We present an algorithm of vehicle tracking based on Kalman filtering in vehicle tracking area, which accomplishes vehicle tracking by vehicle detection, motion estimation and vehicle matching. In addition, the solutions of some typical problems affecting the reliability of detection, such as vehicle shadow, vehicle detection of turning roadway, are put forward. The final video vehicle detecting system is tested on real-world scenes and experiment results illuminates that the system can achieve real-time detection of images and a high detecting accuracy.
