As the exploration to the space more and more deeply, people can act in the space for a long time and the activity of the study on the space become more and more often. More spatial images have to be collected, so the data transmitted to the ground is becoming very large. The image information with large data size will bring very large press on the capacity of the memory located in the satellite and the channel bandwidth of the main line of communication and the speed of the computer. So it makes new demand to the compressing algorithm on the spatial images. The algorithm should not only have a good effect on the images, but also have a low algorithm complex degree, so it will satisfy the accomplishment on the low complex degree hardware. To solve the requests on the spatial image compression effectively, the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) has recently adopted a new recommendation for image data compression algorithm released in 2005 as a standard. The Recommended Standard solves the problem of efficiently compressing the digital image two-dimensional spatial data from payload instruments and to specify how this compressed data will be formatted into segments to enable decompression at the receiving end. This algorithm can reduce the amount of digital data to achieve benefits, so it not only can reduce the data-transmission time at a given rate. This algorithm has important significance to space data compression.The compression algorithm advised by CCSDS image compression standard mainly contains two parts: one is DWT (discrete wavelet transform), to get rid of the relations of the image data; the other one is BPE, to encode and output the coefficients transformed by DWT. We have studied on the encoding of the CCSDS image compression algorithm, and have cached hold of the flow of the encoding algorithm. We have reduced the amounts of the codes and optimized the algorithm based on the features of the BF561, and finally transplanted it to the DSP.Finally we summarized the work and the deficiency of the work, and putted forward the future direction.
