In modem China, with the invasion of western countries, the Chinese nation were faced with serious crisis. In order to strive for national independence and social progress, the advanced Chinese had been unceasingly seeking the truth from the western countries. Chen chi was one of them. In this thesis, we will research chen is thought on four parts: The first part is about the double influence on the traditional culture and the coming of western culture to his thought. It will be discussed in four aspects. First, he inherited the active factors of traditional thoughts, mainly the thought of regarding the people as the foundation and the thinking of changing . Second, with the stimulation of objective circumstance, he formed the thinking of changing, which provided the outside condition for the forming of his reforming thought. Third, his reforming thought was the result of his own efforts. when he was young, he had traveled in the places along the sea, studied the western culture, and made friends with the reforming figures, and bought and read the books about the West, which accelerated the forming of his reforming thought. Fourth, he used the theory of the western culture originating from the Chinese culture and the essay of changing implements as the theoretical basis of his thought. The second part is about his economic thought of developing capitalism, which is the difference between him and the other early reforming thinkers. After studying the relations between all the departments of the national economy broadly, he raised the thought to develop the agriculture, industry and business comprehensively. His thought about the agriculture was more advanced than the other figures of his generation . Many views in his economic thought are still of value to today抯 socialist market economy. ??- The third part is about his political thought, in which mainly is his plan to make a constitutional monarchy nation and congress politics. Although he was a fedual official, he dared to criticize the autocratic monarch failings and advance to form the congress system similar to the western countries. The fourth part is about his educational reforming thought of setting up schools and cultivating people of ability. He understood that the basic reason for the prosperity of the western countries was that they attached importance to the education. But in China the old educational system had been the shackles of the talent and the hindrance of social development . In order to make China rich and strong, Chen Chi criticized the fedual educational system mercilessly and put forward his own plan of educational reform, for example, making adaption of the imperial xamii, setting up the mathmatics department, initiating the modern schools, sending more students abroad , advocating the liberation of women etc, in which there were many original views. The last is the ending words commenting on him comprehensively and concluding the feature of his thought. As a transitional figure in the transitional period, he took two duties alone, conservatism and progress. His political, economic and educational thought had important influence on the late reforming movement. His thought had four features: carrying and passing, patriotism extensiveness but unsystematization, obvious limitations of class and times . In a word , Chen Chi?s thought was progressive at that time , and it embodied the
