Abstract


With the development of sub-urbanization, the population, industries, trade organizations, residence centered at the downtown have transferred into the suburb, and the urban culture and their live style diffuse into the rural areas too. Based on the rapid development of sub-urbanization, decentralization of industries and urbanization of rural areas, a new independent region called urban fringe emerged between urban and rural areas. In China, the research of urban fringe has become the focus closely concerned with the development and expansion of middle and super cities with the rapid development of urbanization, great changes will take place in the urban fringes, which bring about new chance to develop and new challenge to be faced. Based on the theories of urban structure and urban development and taking the city of Jinan as a case, the thesis pritiiarily probes into some questions of the concept, characteristics and growth mechanism of urban fringe. The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one mainly discusses the concept and functions of urban fringe and presents the co-relative data of Jinan, which serve as the basis. of analyzing furthermore. Chapter two mainly explains the basic characteristics of urban fringe and makes an analysis based on location, population, society, land use, and extensity and so on in detail. Chapter three mainly introduces the growth mechanism of urban fringe and its series of affected factors: trigger, accelerate and safeguard. Charter four mainly gives out the newly arisen questions of urban fringe and the countermeasures, which, to some extent, will benefit the local and central government to macroscopically manage and adjust the development of urban fringe.
