Abstract

With the improvement of modern ship’s equipment performance and complexity, the risk and pressure of research and manufacture are raised. On the premise of meeting ship’s usage requirement, how to improve ship design quality, how to shorten research and manufacture cycle and how to decrease cost are subjects that should be solved for a long time. In order to change ship design and acquisition, simulation and virtual reality-based technology is applying ship in design and acquisition. It is also the ship design technology and research focus. Simulation-based acquisition (SBA) is a potentially revolutionary process for the acquisition of complex platforms or systems. It integrates all acquisition activities starting with requirements definition through production, deployment, and operational support into a computational network with a common database. This integrated approach enables the optimization of design, manufacturing, and life-cycle support functions associated with complex systems. SBA need a lot of technologies: how to generate virtual prototype and Step-based data exchange method and theory is the main idea in this paper.Firstly, the topics comprehensively analyzes the present situation, development trends and problems about the application of virtual reality(VR) in ship design both home and abroad. The consideration based on PC desktop VR system is meet the demand of the current situation of ship design and actual requirement. The link between the bases of CAD and VR is built by means of integration of CAD data for reducing time and work.Secondly, this paper describes a data-sharing approach through Standard for the Transfer and Exchange of Product model data (STEP) on a network environment. Several different approaches to the exchange of design data are identified and described in this paper. This approach consists of product modeling according to STEP methodology, feature recognition from 2D drawings, and topological changes in the geometric data using a non-manifold modeler and Common Object Request Broker Architecture(CROBA) objects in the network. The research work in this paper will become the foundation for different designers to share design data and virtual design, also implement SBA and virtual reality in ship design.
