Abstract

It has been widely acknowledged that second language (L2) listening comprehension is crucial in daily communication and second language acquisition. The Requirement for College English Teaching (2007) puts an emphasis on facilitating college students in obtaining guidance of learning strategies in order to improve their autonomous study ability. Domestic studies on listening strategies tend to take undergraduates but not vocational college students as subjects. Based on this consideration, this study is focused on listening strategies used by vocational college students.This study employs questionnaire to investigate the tendency of listening strategies use and interviews to probe into the difference in use of listening strategies between efficient and inefficient students in vocational colleges. The subjects are 100 students from three intact classes of second year English-majored students in Fujian Foreign Language and Foreign Trade Vocational College. Research questions are as follows:1) Do vocational college students often use listening strategies? 2) Which type of strategies is most commonly used by Chinese vocational college students? 3) What is the difference in use of listening strategies between efficient and inefficient students? Through this research, the present thesis attempts to provide some suggestions on improving English listening teaching and listening strategies training in vocational colleges.The thesis is mainly composed of five chapters as follows:Chapter One introduction is to analyze the status quo of listening teaching and learning in vocational colleges and the significance of the present study.Chapter Two is based on the theoretical insight into listening comprehension and listening strategies. Starting from the relevant theories of listening comprehension, this chapter elaborates on the definition, essence, processes, importance and affecting factors of listening comprehension. Then a literature review of studies related to the present study is presented. The definitions and classifications of learning strategies, and the review of listening strategy studies abroad and at home is included.Chapter Three is mainly on the research purpose, methods, subjects, instruments and procedures of this study.Chapter Four carries out an analysis of and a discussion on the data collected, which is the core part of this thesis. Quantitative method is employed in this study to investigate listening strategy use by vocational college students. Statistical software SPSS 11.5 is employed for the analyses of mean, SD, variance and Cronbach Alpha of the data. Conclusions drawn from this study are as follows:1) Chinese vocational college students use strategies at a low level, while most learners do use a few listening strategies subconsciously. Among the three major strategies used, ranked in terms of total frequency, the strategies are cognitive strategies, meta-cognitive strategies, and socio-affective strategies.2) Effective listeners and ineffective listeners are significantly different in learning strategy use. Effective listeners use more meta-cognitive strategies in their learning; while ineffective listeners seldom use any strategy, especially meta-cognitive strategies.Chapter Five is the conclusion of this thesis. Major findings and limitation of this investigation, pedagogical implication, together with suggestions for future study are covered. It also makes a deep insight into listening strategy training in the aspects of goals, types and approaches.
