Abstract


Text comprehension is on a more complex level of cognitive processing based on word and sentence level. Researchers believe that the most important task for readers in the process of reading is to construct coherent text representation. Since it’s impossible for authors to express themselves thoroughly simply by explicit information of the text, readers must make inferences according to the text to build coherent text representation. Researchers defined two kinds of inferences: forward inference and backward inference.Researchers believe that both forward inference and backward inference occur in the process of text reading comprehension. The primary difference between forward inference, backward inference and logical reasoning is the interaction between inferences and context. It’s the reason why we should integrate forward and backward inference with complete text when we’re to explore the mechanism of them. Meanwhile, to analyze the interaction between inferences and context means to explore the mechanism of access of antecedent information when making inferences. Many studies of text comprehension and inferences are in the L1 field. To learn the impact of antecedent information on forward and backward inference in L2 text reading comprehension is much helpful to explore the characteristics of L2 reading of Chinese-English bilinguals.There were 2 experiments in the study. 3X2 complete randomized design and moving windows technique was used in experiment 1. Participants were non-English majors who had passed Band 4 exams. In experiment 1, the impact of consistency of antecedent information on forward and backward inference had been explored. The result showed the interaction between antecedent and forward and backward inference. On the consistent level, forward inference had been significantly promoted, while backward inference hadn’t been influenced significantly. On the inconsistent level, both forward inference and backward inference had been promoted significantly.
